Why are some Chinese students choosing Spain despite its tough job market?

For Daisy Chen, a graduate of one of China’s top medical universities, choosing Spain over Britain, the United States and Australia puzzled many of her friends. Instead of following the well-trodden path to an English-speaking country, she began a master’s degree programme in healthcare management in Barcelona. “I didn’t choose the US, the UK or Australia because they were too expensive, and I felt the competition there would probably be just as intense as in China,” she said. “I wanted to study

I watched Vietnam Fall for the VinFast VF 3

HANOI, Vietnam — I have driven through enough of Vietnam to get a good sense of what belongs on its roads. Over the past two years, my trips have taken me from Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City to Da Nang, Hai Phong and Can Tho, and through Dong Nai, ... A black hole shredded a “super sun” — but something strange may have survived

Astronomers have witnessed a black hole violently shredding a massive star, creating one of the most energetic stellar explosions ever observed. The event, nicknamed “the Whippet,” briefly released about 400 billion times the Sun’s energy and sent a shock wave racing outward at one-fifth the speed of light. Months later, scientists spotted unexpectedly fast-moving helium, suggesting that some structure may have survived the destruction.

COVID-19 awakens dormant viruses — and one is linked to long COVID

COVID-19 can reactivate dormant viruses hiding in the body, including Epstein-Barr, cytomegalovirus, and several herpes viruses. One poorly understood viral family was strongly associated with long COVID and lasting disability, offering a potentially important clue to why some patients struggle to recover.

Home province of DeepSeek, Moonshot founders seeks to retain, attract future AI talent

China’s southern manufacturing powerhouse of Guangdong province welcomed nearly 40 computer science students from Tsinghua University this week, part of a targeted push by local authorities to bridge a widening gap in China’s artificial intelligence race by attracting top-tier talent from Beijing. Despite raising two of China’s brightest minds in artificial intelligence – Moonshot AI founder Yang Zhilin and DeepSeek founder Liang Wenfeng – Guangdong failed to retain either. After graduating from

China’s high-spending counties emerge as bright spot as domestic demand remains weak

Before Sam’s Club – the American membership-only retailer with status appeal among China’s urban middle class – opened in the lesser-known city of Jingshan in Hubei province, Zhang Liang decided to “bring it there” himself. The former truck driver invested about 600,000 yuan (US$88,969) in May to open a Sam’s Club reseller shop, sourcing goods from authorised Sam’s stores to sell locally. He was betting that consumers in Jingshan, despite its modest population of fewer than 600,000, would pay a.

Luxury home sales rebound in mainland China but overall market recovery unlikely: analysts

Sales of luxury homes in mainland China’s top cities are picking up as high-net-worth individuals, benefiting from the country’s tech boom, splash out billions of yuan to improve their housing. The buying binge has sparked expectations of a broad market recovery after a six-year property slump across the country, according to brokers. But analysts said such homes represented just a small portion of the mainland’s property industry, with increasing sales and higher prices not enough to turn the..
