Deutsche Bank’s yuan mandate boosts Chinese currency’s global reach

The People’s Bank of China (PBOC) authorising Deutsche Bank to serve as a renminbi clearing bank in Frankfurt marks a pivotal milestone in the protracted narrative of the currency’s internationalisation. It also carries profound geoeconomic implications that extend far beyond the immediate efficiencies of cross-border payments. By granting this designation to a German institution – the first European lender to receive such a mandate – Beijing has recalibrated the axis of its financial diplomacy,

A hidden “on switch” in human DNA has finally been decoded

Researchers have used AI to uncover the DNA signature of a key genetic “switch” involved in turning genes on. After analyzing about 500,000 DNA sequences, the model identified the initiator in roughly 60% of human genes. The breakthrough could help predict the effects of harmful mutations and eventually contribute to decoding the broader genetic instructions that control gene activity throughout the body.

Synthetic everything is warping America

A shadowy polling firm confessed this week to faking survey results in two marquee races — then claimed the entire operation was a "short-term social experiment" on misinformation. Why it matters: An AI-enabled flood of synthetic and outright fabricated content is wreaking havoc on reality, poisoning the signals people rely on to understand politics, business and culture.

China’s overlooked internet army is quietly embedding AI into everyday businesses

While China’s new “AI tigers” have captured global attention for challenging Silicon Valley front-runners, a quieter wave of domestic technology companies is building in-house artificial intelligence systems serving everyday users. Beyond pure-play AI labs like DeepSeek, Z.ai (also known as Zhipu AI), Moonshot AI and MiniMax, consumer-facing platforms that span e-commerce, video gaming, social media and travel are developing foundation models tailored to their own business ecosystems, in efforts

Experimental compound helps burn fat without muscle loss

A decades-old compound may point to a new way of treating obesity by making the body burn more energy rather than simply reducing appetite. In mice, TOFA increased energy use by as much as 18%, reduced body fat without significant muscle loss, and improved blood sugar, triglycerides, and fatty liver disease. It also produced stronger results when combined with GLP-1 drugs such as Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro, and Zepbound.

Exam scores reveal increased student interest in China’s newer, smaller universities

A growing number of China’s top high school students are looking beyond traditional elite universities to smaller, newer, research-intensive institutions that offer curricula focused on technological innovation and its commercialisation. In Guangdong province, two-year-old Shenzhen University of Advanced Technology and one-year-old Great Bay University, in Dongguan, had minimum admission scores from the national entrance exam above 625 this year, higher than many departments at more established.

South China Morning Post

Today, while American financiers continue to visit China and maintain commercial links, those private meetings with the top leadership have largely diminished, even as Beijing gradually opens its capital markets.
