2nd HVDC & Offshore Power Transmission 2022

HVDC technology is becoming increasingly relevant for the long-distance transmission of offshore power to the onshore grid. Large-scale expansion of offshore power generation, particularly in wind, is introducing new challenges in power transmission in terms of reliability and efficiency. Grid complexity increases as interconnections within these power systems are expanding. Further considerations need to be made for long-term expansion planning, new 2GW standards, meshed grids and other innovative topologies. The use of HVDC transmission technology offers numerous benefits in long-distance transmission, bulk electricity delivery, transmission costs and the environment, and is, therefore, an important topic to be discussed in the era of energy transition, that we are facing.

2nd HVDC & Offshore Power Transmission 2022 welcomes decision-makers from power transmission departments of leading Power Generation and TSOs in an exclusive closed-group and business-friendly environment for peer-to-peer networking, ample knowledge-sharing and learning opportunities in the highly evolving energy sector. This event will examine latest developments, challenges, opportunities and technologies of HVDC to support the expansion of offshore power transmission.

Topics
  • Planning & Design of Denmark’s Future Energy Islands: Large-Scale 100% Inverter-Based Offshore Power System
  • Next Generation of Offshore HVDC Systems: Opportunities and Challenges of the 2 GW Standard
  • Interconnecting the North Sea: Development of Expandable Offshore HVDC Hubs
  • Frequency Support over HVDC Interconnectors
  • Testing and Demonstrating the Benefits of Co-ordinated Offshore Solutions within Convertor Dominated Networks
  • Studies for Large-Scale Converter Dominated Systems
  • Ancillary Services from HVDC Connected Offshore Wind Power Plants

Tennet

In 2009, Tennet commissioned- BorWin1, the world’s first direct current link between an offshore wind farm and the onshore power grid. The BorWin1 is more than 200 kilometers long. Since 2006, Tennet has been implementing grid connections for Offshore wind farms in the Northsea. Tennet has to-date completed 12 gird connections and aims to install 4 more offshore grid connections by 2027, bringing over 10GW of offshore wind power from the North Sea to the German power grid.

Vattenfall

Vattenfall is the largest generator of offshore wind power in Denmark and operates 5 offshore wind farms across 5 European countries, generating over 3.5 GW of electricity. Vattenfall’s Kriegers Flak, inaugurated in September 2021 is Scandinavia’s largest offshore wind farm and generates 604 MW of electricity from 72 wind turbines. Over 170 kilometers of offshore power cables service to bring the power to the power grid. The Hollandse Kust Zuid scheduled to be operational in 2023 will be the world’s largest offshore wind farm, generating 1500 MW of electricity from 140 turbines.

Energinet

Energinet is at the forefront of offshore power infrastructure development in Europe. The COBRAcable – 329 kilometers long, cable-link connecting Denmark and Netherlands is a joint venture between Energinet and Tennet. Energinet and National Grid are installing the Viking Link, an HVDC interconnector between Denmark and the Great Britain- covering over 760 kilometers.

Amprion

Amprion is part of two offshore grid connections- LanWin1 and LanWin3, scheduled to be operational in 2031 and 2033, connecting offshore wind farms in the North Sea to the onshore power grid. The connections run 160 and 170 kilometers’ respectively at sea from the North Sea wind farms. Amprion is also a key promoter of Eurobar, an initiative for connecting offshore wind platforms in Europe. It has signed an MoU with six other European TSOs – 50hertz, Red Electrica De Espana, Rte, Statnett, Terna and Svenska Kraftnat- for the development of Eurobar.

Svenska Kraftnat

Svenska kraftnät has been commissioned by the Swedish Government to expand its transmission network to regions in Sweden’s territorial waters to connect offshore wind farms to the grid. This project would play a significant role in Sweden’s goal to generate 100% of its energy needs from renewables. The Hansa PowerBridge, a joint venture between 50Hertz and Svenska Kraftnat is expected to be operational by 2026. The HVDC interconnector between Germany and Sweden will be 300 kilometers long.

RTE

RTE has connected and supported 15 French offshore energy projects and has become one of the prominent players in the offshore wind sector in Europe. RTE is also the technical consultant for the design and execution of the Sofia Offshore Wind farm, an offshore wind farm in the North Sea with a generating capacity of 1.4GW.
