The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is undertaking a massive airport expansion and upgrade program to serve 330 million travelers by 2030 through $147 billion in investments that will support $82.3 billion of GDP by 2037. The General Authority of Civil Aviation, under its National Aviation Sector Strategy, plans to increase air connectivity to 250 destinations, reaching 330 million passengers, and double air cargo capacity to 4.5 million tons by the end of the decade. The King Salman International Airport, due to be built in the capital Riyadh, will have no fewer than six parallel runways, allowing 185 million passengers to pass through annually by 2050. Built over the current King Khalid International Airport, it will sprawl over a whopping 22 square miles. The Kingdom also launched a new national airline Riyadh Air to complement its existing flag carrier and expand its existing international and domestic airports.
Saudi Arabia is relaunching its strategy to privatize its airports in order to secure investment and triple annual visitor numbers by 2030. GACA and Matarat Holding Company have announced the official transformation of 25 airports to private sector bodies, including Jeddah Airports Company and the Cluster 2 Company. The goal is to improve service, integrate international best practices, and increase competitiveness. Investment and commercial opportunities in the sector, including airports, freight, catering, maintenance, and ground services, will be opened to local and foreign investors soon.
