China’s worsening retail slowdown bolsters case for stimulus

China’s retail sales growth unexpectedly slumped in August, while industrial output accelerated more than anticipated, as the economy increasingly divides between a domestic slowdown and an export boom. August retail sales only rose 0.4 per cent, missing the 0.7 per cent forecast among economists polled by Chinese financial data provider Wind and slowing from 0.6 per cent in July. By contrast, industrial output jumped 5.2 per cent, beating the 4.7 per cent expectation and July’s 4.5 per cent...
